साउथ ईस्टर्न एसईसीएल की स्थापना 28-11-1985 में हुई थी। 28-11-1985 को वेस्टर्न कोलफील्ड के BSP डिवीजन के ताजा डिवीजन के अधिग्रहण और अधिग्रहण के उद्देश्य से की गई थी। एसईसीएल कोयला और लिग्नाइट क्षेत्र में एक शेड्यूल बी मिनी रत्ना है। यह कोयला मंत्रालय के तहत कोल इंडिया लिमिटेड है। (भारत सरकार का एक उपक्रम) कि 8 सहायक कंपनियों में से एक है, जिसका पंजीकृत कारपोरेट कार्यालय बिलासपुर छत्तीसगढ़ में है।

SECL की स्थापना 1985 को हुई थी यह 28-11-1985 को हुई, यह एक मिनिरत्न कंपनी है जो कि भारत की सबसे बड़ी कोयला उत्पादक कंपनी है। और यह कोल् इंडिया लिमिटेड की आठ पूर्ण स्वामित्व वाली सहायक कंपनियों में से एक है जो पूरे प्रदेश में कोयला व प्रदेश से बाहर कोयला वितरण करता है।

SECL के चार प्रमुख कोयला क्षेत्र है, जैसे सेंट्रल कोलफील्ड्स(cic), कोरबा कोलफील्ड, रायगढ़ कोलफील्ड और रामकोला तातपानी कोलफील्ड है। यह प्रभावी प्रशासनिक नियंत्रण एवं संचालन खानो को 13 प्रशासनिक क्षेत्रों में निम्नानुसार वर्गीकृत किया गया है,सेंट्रल इंडिया कोलफील्ड चिरमिरी क्षेत्र SECL यह  देश में सर्वाधिक कोयला उत्पादन करने वाली कंपनी है।साउथ ईस्टर्न कोलफील्ड लिमिटेड का कोयला पूरे छत्तीसगढ़ और मध्य प्रदेश राज्य में फैला हुआ है तथा कंपनी में 67 खदाने संचालित है।जिसमें 41 खदाने छत्तीसगढ़ राज्य में और 26 खदाने मध्य प्रदेश राज्य में स्थित है। और इसमें से दोनों प्रदेशों में कुल मिलाकर 46 भूमिगत खदाने है, और 21 खाली खदाने हैं। और यह कॉल इंडिया के नियंत्रण में कार्य करती है।
